Porters Retreat Cemetery Alias Mary Vale Old Cemetery
The old cemetery at Porters Retreat,
also known as the Mary Vale Old cemetery is documented back to 1856 and was
in use until 1889. It is situated in a western paddock of the “Mary
Vale” property. Because of the harshness of the location (on a stony
hill) and the improvidence of the times, no headstone marks any grave. We
would be grateful if any reader who could have had family connections with
the Porters Retreat area in that 40 year period would examine any death
certificates they may have and supply us with any information they may find. We have found the
wording is usually “buried at Mary Vale”, but there are
variations. One in 1859 is recorded “buried at Coote Hill” (the
original name for Mary Vale). In 1869 “buried at Little River” is
used as is “buried at Mount Mary” in 1871.In that period
“Little River” also referred to the private Clayton Cemetery at
Arkstone, where it overlooks the Little River. To add to the confusion the
current Porters Retreat Cemetery is often called the “Little River” Cemetery
because of its location near Little River on the Oberon Taralga Road.
