INTRODUCTION TO DUBBO

By Councillor Anthony Mcgrane OAM, Mayor.

Dubbo has come a long way since the year 1833, when Robert Dulhunty, squatter, turned his first sod of soil. The little settlement known as "Old Dubbo" has grown from a frontier town to a thriving regional centre with a population of 38,000. The city also acts as a service centre for a third of New SouthWales.

Dubbo is extremely progressive and has one of the highest growth rates in regional Australia with the city's centralised location and its extensive and well developed transport infrastructure, the catalyst behind the city's growth.

Dubbo is home to world class businesses such as Fletchers International Exports which employs in excess of 700 people, exports to 75 countries and has annual gross sales figures of $100,000,000 in export earnings.

The city is also renowned as the home of the Western Plains Zoo which attracts in excess of 200,000 visitors per annum. The Zoo plays an important part in breeding programmes for endangered species such as the Prezwalski Horse and the Black Rhinoceros. This year a black rhino calf was born at the zoo as part of the programme to help build numbers of this endangered species. The programme was also the basis for the signing of a sister city agreement with the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, near the home of the black rhino.

As Dubbo continues to grow, so too does the need to provide facilities for its residents and the surrounding Orana Region. To this end negotiations are under way to establish a campus of Charles Sturt University in Dubbo. Students are already taking advantage of CSU's links with the city and are studying university courses through Dubbo's TAFE campus.

This year, 1996, has seen a major announcement made that will help boost further growth and development in the city. AGL announced it will construct a natural gas pipeline from Marsden in the state's south through to Dubbo. It is expected the pipeline will be in place by the end of 1997. This will help attract new business and industry to Dubbo as they will be able to take advantage of this alternate, cheap energy source.

Overseeing much of the development of the city is the Dubbo City Development Corporation. This organisation was established in 1994 and is supported by sponsorship from local businesses.

The corporation aims to bring new business and industry to the city to create new jobs and opportunities for local residents.

The role of the Dubbo City Development Corporation along with Dubbo City Council and the many progressive businesses that call Dubbo home will help ensure the city continues to grow and takes its place as the state's most important inland regional city.
